A "Force Multiplier" is a resource that increases the effectiveness of a team by bolstering the resilience of the team's members and amplifying their capabilities. As an active duty military psychologist, Dr. Miller spent 12 years advising military commands, including deployed U.S. forces in Afghanistan, on the mental health statuses of their personnel and providing hands-on guidance to establish the best possible services for team members in need.
Dr. Miller's role as a force multiplier in the military is an extension of a lifelong history devoted to identifying the mental health needs of adults, children,
employees, and students, as well as compassionately connecting those individuals with the right services for them. As a civilian, Dr. Miller has provided consultation to government agencies, law firms, financial institutions, law enforcement units, private hospitals, and academic institutions, in addition to the military units with whom he served.

Clinical Consultations
If you are interested in meeting with our clinical psychologist (Dr. Kevin Miller) prior to initiating clinical (i.e., treatment-related) services, you are welcome to do so. Dr. Miller will talk with you by phone or virtual platform to discuss your goals, answer your questions, and provide you with the opportunity to directly assess whether American Psychological Services would be the best clinical service for you.
There is no charge for clinical consultations with prospective clinical clients.
Comprehensive Evaluation
A true comprehensive evaluation is critical to competent, high-quality clinical care. Many providers consider an "evaluation" to be an hour spent introducing one another, chatting about symptoms and goals, and discussing the business parameters of therapy. In our view, these items are important, but not nearly sufficient to set the stage for adequate clinical services.
At American Psychological Services, LLC, you will receive a biopsychosocial assessment, the true gold standard of clinical evaluation. A conscientious, integrative evaluation of this sort is a prerequisite for understanding and appreciating the complexity and depth of an individual's psychological constitution and emotional health. Our initial evaluations are no less than 90 minutes in length and often run significantly longer. There is a flat fee for evaluations, so you will not be charged for the additional time. Our priority is attaining a thorough understanding of you and setting the stage for effective therapy.
As such, our clinical psychologist, Dr. Miller, will provide a comprehensive psychological evaluation that coalesces the salient biological, psychological, and psychosocial factors from your personal history. More specifically, he will integrate contemporary emotional, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms with your physiological, developmental, social, relational, occupational, and other relevant history. At the conclusion of the evaluation, Dr. Miller will offer a clinical conceptualization of your psychological functioning, including diagnostic considerations (if applicable), as well as clear, specific treatment recommendations.
In addition, if you do not engage in follow-up services with us (whether as a result of your preference or Dr. Miller's recommendation), Dr. Miller will provide guidance to you in your search for the right clinician - at no charge. Thus, you will receive clinical guidance, tailored to you, without a commitment on your part to any future services.
Evaluations are conducted in-person or through internet-based virtual platforms, in accordance with your preference.

PHILOSOPHY & STYLE

Psychotherapy is, at its core, a profound exploration of the fundamental conditions of human existence: the confrontation with suffering, death, freedom, isolation, and meaning. The goal is to help individuals come to terms with the inherent uncertainty and chaos of life. certain inescapable realities-life is finite, pain is inevitable, and the meaning of existence is elusive.
As a psychotherapist, Dr. Miller guides patients to face these realities head-on, to confront the deep anxiety that arises from recognizing the weight of their freedom and the responsibility to create their own meaning in a universe that doesn't hand it to them on a silver platter.

However, it's not just about accepting the darkness; it's about transcending it. The goal isn't to comfort you by saying life will get easier or that all suffering can be avoided-because it can't. Instead, it's to empower you to develop the strength of character to bear that suffering, to take on the challenge of existence with courage and integrity. The existential approach emphasizes personal responsibility: you are responsible for making your life meaningful, for imbuing it with purpose through your actions, through your ability to stand up straight in the face of adversity and say, "I will live according to my highest values, no matter how hard it gets." In this way, existential therapy pushes individuals toward authenticity, a way of being where you align your actions with your deepest beliefs, no matter the cost.

As such, Dr. Miller's clinical approach is integrative. More specifically, he integrates psychological theory with continental philosophy, theology, modern history, economic theory, anthropology, and the fine arts, as well as tenets of contemporary Japanese culture.

A "Force Multiplier" is a resource that increases the effectiveness of a team by bolstering the resilience of its members and amplifying their capabilities. This was Dr. Miller's mission during his 12 years as a military psychologist.
Dr. Miller deployed with the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan, where he served as one of three clinical psychologists on the Combat Stress Team tasked with treating and supporting U.S. OEF personnel in Regional Command Southwest, Helmand Province. He advised combat zone commanders and field-officers on mental health issues within their team, and he was charged with assessing the mental health statuses of warriors in their combat environments, as well as the occupational capabilities/limitations of Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers throughout the region. Dr. Miller also responded to mass casualty events, as traumatic incidents and psychologically-strenuous situations unfolded.
While in garrison (i.e., at his "home" command), Dr. Miller routinely advised military commanders on the mental health status and fitness-for-duty of individual service members while embedded with infantry and seaboard units. He performed innumerable evaluations of Sailors, Marines, and Soldiers over the course of his 12 years serving the United States military. In addition to providing direct guidance regarding unit personnel's fitness for duty, he advised Commanders on optimal services for team members with psychological needs. Dr. Miller also trained countless physicians, nurses, and other military hospital staff on assessment and effective intervention for personnel with mental health issues, especially depressive symptoms, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, relational problems, and other occupational struggles, in addition to their risk for suicide and violence. In addition, he conducted evaluations of civilians, as well as service members, seeking security clearances or applying for specialized duties in sensitive locations or organizations. Further, he conducted forensic evaluations of individuals in the military and civilian justice systems, including those in the Courts Martial and other disciplinary processes. Dr. Miller also published his doctoral dissertation on strategies for assessing the suicide risk of service members within their occupational environments, as well proper follow-up and clinical interventions for those at elevated risk.
Dr. Miller's military role as a force multiplier is an extension of similar, long-standing endeavors in his civilian life. For over a decade, he has provided mental health consultation to non-military government agencies, private law firms, financial institutions, hospitals, and academic institutions, in addition to the military commands with whom he served. Vocationally, Dr. Miller is devoted to identifying the mental health needs of civilian adults, youth, students, and employees, and compassionately connecting those individuals with the best possible services for them. His particular areas of expertise are: 1) identifying mental health issues among an organization's personnel, 2) developing strategies for effective intervention, and 3) connecting in-need personnel with the optimal mental health services for them, as well as 4) providing training and guidance on mental health issues to each level of a team's hierarchy.
Whether it be civilian or uniformed personnel, Dr. Miller is an expert in communicating with (and assisting) team members in a manner that is authentic and, most importantly, effective. Furthermore, Dr. Miller will provide continuous follow-up consultation to leaders as their in-need personnel connect with the proper treatment and pivotal collateral services. And, he will advise leaders on the evolving mental health statuses and occupational capabilities for personnel with whom they intervene and assist.
